By Diana Skinner: Like most musicians, the four members of the Miró Quartet have been in isolation with their families since mid-March. They are soon coming together following strict protocols to perform all 16 Beethoven string quartets in a 12-concert subscription cycle. The live performances will be streamed from a stunning private venue within the quartets home city of Austin (TX) as part of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.
The Miró Quartet is comprised of violinists Daniel Ching and William Fedkenheuer, violist John Largess, and cellist Joshua Gindele. In discussing Beethoven and his relevance to todays turbulent times, the quartet writes: Beethovens world was one of uncertainty, sweeping and violent societal change, and revolution and war. On a personal level, he continuously faced unsolved health crises of deafness and an unknown disease that would ultimately claim his life. Miraculously, Beethoven transformed his personal struggles into music of great power, anger, and determination, as well as great peace, longing, and hope. In times of global uncertainty and personal upheaval, music can be one of the most powerful means to unite us all, give us inspiration to live differently, and comfort us in our struggles.
