By Paul Stein: One of the most amazing, magical qualities that classical music enjoys is the ability to hold itself together. The self-sustaining mechanism consists of a steady beat and players trained to play their notes within the beat. The ear notices the change in dynamics and naturally adjusts. Changes in tempo during a rubato section, when the tempo ebbs and flows because of the musics character, are structured in a predictable manner. Without these examples of musics predictability, it would be a virtual free-for-all.
The same rules of engagement apply to chamber music, but there are no traffic cops to keep everyone in their lane and going at the same speed. With so many variables at play that can throw things off, it helps to bring a sense of humor to the rehearsal.
There can be a sense of dynamic energy if the players feel secure and bold. What to avoid at all costs is a session of hurt feelings and micro-management. When an ensemble works, there is a mutual respect that encourages each person to state their opinion about only things that can change the context of the music. Like politics, music is the art of the possible. There is also sensitivity to which subjects should be avoided.
Strong Leader and Equal Partnership
Two things come up regularly in a chamber music rehearsal: maintaining the status quo and introducing new tempos, articulations, and dynamics. A few unwritten rules can promote a positive atmosphere.

- When anyone makes a suggestion, it should be implemented without debate. This pre-supposes that the suggestion is reasonable and doesnt negate something that someone else asked for. This shows that you trust and respect your colleague to make good, practical changes.
- It takes a lot of concentration on your own playing to simply get the right notes, rhythms, and textures. Avoid turning your attention to someone elses playing. Theres enough to keep you busy with your own.
- Once a new idea has been introduced, its the responsibility of the leader to keep the flow of the phrase from unraveling. Music has a strong personality, so its important to observe the strong musical current at play. The leader makes sure that all rhythmic proportions are adhered to. Because of strong leadership, musical boundaries are very clear. Lots of new ideas from other players can be incorporated if the leader is willing to include them all. Obviously, they need to be clear and simple, and not contradict each other.
- Make suggestions that are easy to express and just as easy to understand. To avoid what may seem like a personal attack, address the group as a whole. Since it may take some individuals a little longer to make the adjustment, make time for several repetitions.
