By Laurie Niles: The 11th Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition began on Sunday, with preliminary rounds starting Monday and running through Oct. 10 in Hannover, Germany. The rounds will be livestreamed on the competition's website as well as its Youtube channel.

They are: Yurina Arai, Clarissa Bevilacqua, Claire Bourg, Jane-Hyeonjin Cho, Elli Choi, Adam Koch Christensen, Javier Comesana, Daniel Dastoor, Sara Domjanic, Hawijch Elders, Fanny Fheodoroff, Irene Fiorito, Yuki Hirano, Maria Ioudenitch, Lorenz Karls, Alexander Won-Ho Kim, Namhyun Kim, Agnes Langer, Anna Lee, Jaeook Lee, Charlotte Marckx, Mathilde Mildwidsky, Elias David Moncado, Yukari Ohno, Enrique Rodrigues, Chara Sannicandro, Dongyoung Jake Shim, Julian Walder, Alexander Weissbecker, Minami Yoshida and Zhixin Zhang.
The competition includes five rounds. The Final round will feature just four violinists, who will each perform a major violin concerto as well as the commissioned work "To play in the garden" by Manfred Trojahn, with the NDR Radiophilharmonie under the direction of Andrew Manze.
The first-prize winner will receive a 30,000 prize, three-year-loan of a Guadagnini violin and the creation of a debut album, to be distributed by Warner Classics. All four finalists will receive a prize of 10,000, as well as sheet music vouchers from G. Henle Verlag. There will also be a 2,000 Audience Award; 5,000 best interpretation of the commissioned work award; and 3,000 Chamber Music Award.
The jury consists of five violinists and four other representatives of the classical music world: violinists Carolin Widmann (chair), Ana Chumachenco, Suyoen Kim, Zohrab Tadevosyan, Ulf Wallin and Donald Weilerstein; and singer Christine Schäfer, pianist Robert Levin, music journalist Eleonore Büning and conductor Andrew Manze.
The Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover, sponsored by Stiftung Niedersachsen, was founded in 1991 by Krzysztof Wegrzyn and takes place every three years. In 2019 Antje Weithaas and Oliver Wille took over the artistic directorship.
