Semi-finalists Named in 2023 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition

By Laurie Niles: Eight violinists have been named semi-finalists in the Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition, which started on Jan. 15 at Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Fla. They are:
  • Zachary Brandon, 24, of the United States
  • Gabrielle Després, 22,of Canada / United States
  • Hiu Sing Fan, 26, of Hong Kong
  • Irenè Fiorito, 22, of Italy
  • Laurel Gagnon, 28, of the United States
  • Yanis Grisó, 19, of Luxembourg
  • Hina Khuong-Huu, 18, of France / Japan / United States
  • Haerim Oh, 23, of South Korea

2023 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition semi-finalists.
Semi-finals will take place Jan. 24 and 25 at Lynn Conservatory of Music. Four finalists will be selected, and they will perform with the Lynn Philharmonia, conducted by Guillermo Figueroa during the final round, which will take place January 28 and 29. You can watch the semi-finals on the Oliveira Competition's Youtube page. Winners will be announced Jan. 29, with awards including a First Prize of $30,000; Second Prize of $15,000; Third Prize of $10,000; and Honorable Mention of $5,000. The 2023 jury includes violinist Andrés Cárdenes (Chairman), Ilya Kaler, Ida Kavafian, Irina Muresanu, Barry Shiffman, Almita Vamos, and Peter Zazofsky. David Cerone, who served as EOIVC 2020 Chairman of the Jury, will act as an alternate judge. Past winners include Former Julian Rhee (2020) and Sirena Huang (2017 - the competition's inaugural year).
