For the Record, Op. 26: Del Sol Quartet Records Terry Riley; Cellist Antonio Meneses

In celebration of composer Terry Riley's 80th birthday, Del Sol Quartet has paired up with guitarist Gyan Riley (Terry Riley's son) to commission a piece from the composer called "Dark Queen Mantra." Del Sol violist Charlton Lee first met guitarist Gyan Riley while playing in an ensemble led by the composer/bassist Gavin Bryars. “I’d been wanting to find more opportunities to play with Gyan ever since we met,” Charlton said in a press release, "and with Terry’s 80th birthday on the horizon it seemed a perfect time to commission a new piece for all of us to play together.” The first movement of the piece is called "Vizcaino," for the hotel in Algeciras where Riley first stayed in Spain. The second movement, “Goya with Wings,” is inspired by Francisco Goya’s paintings, and the last movement, “Dark Queen Mantra,” explores darker territory. Scodanibbio was a collaborator of Terry Riley, and his piece, "Mas Lugares (su Madrigali di Monteverdi" is included as well.Below, Del Sol violist Charlton Lee introduces the album:

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of winning First Prize and the Gold Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, as well as his 60th birthday in August 2017, cellist Antonio Meneses has recorded three works with orchestra he has not previously recorded: Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor, Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.
