The Argus - with violinists Jason Issokson and Clara Kim, violist Dana Kelley, and cellist Joann Whang - will be Arnhold Fellows. They will have lessons with members of the Juilliard String Quartet and will assist in teaching duties. Juilliards Arnhold residencies last one year; recipients are eligible to return once, for a maximum residency of two years. Upon successful completion of the residency, quartet members are awarded Artist Diplomas in String Quartet Studies at Juilliard.
The Argus Quartet served as Yale's fellowship quartet from 2015 to 2017 and also are the Ernst Stiefel graduate quartet in residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts this season. They will replace Juilliard's current graduate resident quartet, The Verona Quartet, which graduates later this month after being in residence since 2015.
Formed in Los Angeles in 2013, the Argus Quartet has performed all over the world and has commissioned new works from Donald Crockett, Eric Guinivan, Thomas Kotcheff and Juri Seo.
Other quartets that have served as Juilliard graduate quartets in residence have included the Aeolus, Afiara, Attacca, Avalon, Biava, Calder, Cassatt, Chiara, Corigliano, Essex, Lark, Maia, Magellan (now renamed the Whitman String Quartet), Miró, St. Lawrence, and Shanghai quartets.
