Regina Carter's homage to Ella Fitzgerald is a collection of nine of the singer's "B-side" hits, reimagined for jazz violin. "There was a period when I would wake up every morning and put on Ella: Ella and coffee, that's what I needed to get through the day," Carter told The Chicago Tribune. It's a beautiful collection, and below is a sample: "Judy," the Connee Boswell song that won Fitzgerald first prize during Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 1934.
This seven-CD set is meant to highlight the best of Simon Rattle's 15 years with the Berlin Philharmonic. Selections include Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique; Mahler's Symphony No. 5; Debussy's "La Mer"; Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring"; Holst's "The Planets"; Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition; Orff's "Carmina Burana" and more. Below: Simon Rattle conducts the Berlin Philharmonic, performing the "Adagietto" from Mahler's Symphony No. 5, in April 2011.If you have a new recording you would like us to consider for inclusion in our Thursday "For the Record" feature, please e-mail Editor Laurie Niles.
